Lagos to introduce electric vehicles in 2010
• POISED to become one of the fastest developing states of the world, the Lagos State Government yesterday said it planned to introduce electric vehicles in the state by January 2010.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Muiz Banire, disclosed this at a sensitisation programme to combat climate change in Ifako-Ijaye Local Council. He said the order had been placed for the vehicles and arrangements concluded to start using them by January 2010.

The technology, which is new around the world, he said, would in the first phase be used by the Ministry of Environment and then other parastatals and councils in the state. The move, he noted, would go a long way in eradicating emission and ultimately promoting the state's cleaner environment initiative.

Lamenting human activities that cause ozone depletion, the commissioner stressed that the state government would also adopt energy efficiency system by replacing the energy consuming bulbs with the energy-saving bulbs. Banire, therefore, urged Lagosians to shun activities that lead to climate change, such as bush burning, refuse burning, unserviced cars and generator emissions, among others.

"Climate change does not only create food crises, but it is also a mass-killer, and that is why it attracts higher attention than Human Immune Virus (HIV)," he said.

In view of this, he said, the state government was committed to combating global warming and will intensify efforts on the existing and emerging strategies, such as the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), Eko solar project, landscaping and beautification and the aggressive tree planting programmes, among others.

The Executive Chairman of Ifako-Ijaye Local Council, Mr. Demola Doherty, who championed the sensitisation programme, said that evidence of change and impacts of climate change abound in every community, hence the need for all and sundry to brace up for the challenges and guarantee life sustainability on earth.

He added: "I therefore urge our people to change their attitude towards the environment and support efforts to reclaim the same from agents of degradation. It is in this direction that our administration will continue to intensify efforts on tree planting.

"We will construct more roads and drainage, linking them with each other to ensure free and unimpeded flow of water, as well as ensure environmental cleanliness and waste disposal management to prevent the occurrence of flood in our council areas."

Global warming is an increase in average temperature of the earth atmosphere, leading to climate change. The rate at which earth is heating up is high and issues such as ozone depletion, melting ice, rising sea level and flooding are also on the increase.

The effects of these are enumerated as mental related diseases, respiratory diseases, increase in temperature, heat waves, food scarcity, low life span, flooding, water contamination and short-term labour, among others.
• @#$*ing stupid...............where on earth do they want to try it?....my state? my town? my Hood?..... look i dont hate modern ideas all i hate is when people use these avenues to eat money....cause they cant even take care of the generator at the national stadiumm, na electric vehicles dem wan bring enter lasgidi.....them dey craze!!!.......we havent solved the power problem yet they want electric vehicles..... wetin we go take charge am? with hot water abi with MILO? wey the light?.... why not we solve one thing at a time, we shouldnt be jumping into one thing without finishing the other.....look at that cruise ship at the Officers Mess on the island...nothing yet, even the bank done play them 419 to collect the boat from them.....and mind you, na that same boat be winner of the best restuarant in the whole of london in 2005 and 2006, now its roting away here in lagos..... BRT are not being repaired ...they still move around dirty and with their damaged faces, thats one...no maintenace culture... how we want take do am even when it succeeds and another party takes over we'll have to use the first 2yrs of their tenure breaking down the previous government...... this electric cars is good to find oyinbo face make them for come invest i understand but after dem come invest, do we always have to apologize when things starts breaking down?

Global warming ko? yrs back ethopians lost alot their lives due to draught..... ,almost like 7 to 8 yrs back london was freezing anything breathing, before now all types of Hurricane don strike even before we knew about the ozone.... its just science crying too loud, for we to invest our money in the products they are selling.............na today? they know africa will come to save them when they blow themselve up, all in the quest to rule the world.....make them hang abeg.
• I hear your rants and your noise o.

But how are you going to explain rainfall in ordinarily dry places like Abuja and Maiduguri in Mid October? Here, we are talking about rainfall that looks like its gonna drop till November and December. Me, I dey hate abomination o.
• thats not an abomination.............its simple logic.....where did you hear any religious leader said that seasons have a specific month where all things must begin and end.....the OWNER of the world never told you that.......Na we, with our little wisdom believe that this is how it should be...believing in it is just like your dad telling something he believed in for so many years and its failing him now.....if you ask him daddy why this thing be like this se bi you say....?..........your dad will tell something he thinks is the cause......whether you believe it or not na these same peeps say we africans be descedants of APES....because we dey stronger physically (of which they dont want us to know that some how we are better of), science to me is findings and findings can be changed, especially when we do not know that every thing including the world has expiry date.....things will start changing when the time of a product reach to expire...there will be a decline in performance......dont blow with their excuses

if record were kept from the beginning, you might find out that such a thing had existed before and it was another story the people of that time said (nothing is new under the sun).........i don experience rain on christmas day.....nothing new, na still the same cloud and the same earth witness am (no jazz inside).........just understand that nature can only do what its suppose to do and nothing more, besides some people somewhere may need it more that us.
• Man! I never knew that you had this kind of fire inside you o.
• you have your own i have my own......na nature we be too .................just as the moon controls the sea tides and the sun controls the body clock.... thats how nature has its ways.....until we learn to adapt or work with it......
